Hampi – the ancient temple town

Recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site, Hampi is an epitome of beauty even in ruins. Every rock and every broken pillar that you come across in this little temple town has a unique story to tell.

While there are several places to visit in Hampi, one must not miss out on the famous Virupaksha Temple that can easily be spotted from any part of the town, owing to its tall structure. The serene temple located on the banks of the Tungabhadra river is considered one of the most sacred shrines by the Hindus. And what is really fascinating is that a narrow channel of this river flows from its terrace, down through the temple’s kitchen and out through its courtyard. It is impressive how the beautiful sculptures and finely carved pillars at the temple complex are still intact, considering it has been in existence since the 7th century.
